What is described as a daylight raid by Royal Air Force heavy craft on the Nazi pocket battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau and the cruiser Prinz Eugen as they lay at Brest on Dec. 18, 1942. The first two, the ministry said, were in dry dock (upper left) and the cruiser (right of center, smoking) was protected by anti-submarine nets. The smoke to right of center is described as bomb bursts. (AP Photo)
