The daylight raid on Brest made by Royal Air Force bombers on Dec. 18, 1942. Targets were the Nazi pocket-battleships, Scharnhorst and Gneisenau, both in drydock, and the cruiser Prinz Eugen, lying in one of the harbor basins protected by anti-submarine nets. The British say the raid was successful despite heavy anti-aircraft fire from the warships and shore batteries and an attempt by the enemy to obscure the target with a smoke screen. The top photo shows Halifax aircraft flying over the target. In the lower picture are seen the Scharnhorst, left, and Gneisenau, right, marked by arrow. The Prinz Eugen can also be distinguished. Heavy bombs explode on and around the objectives, while surface craft sped for the harbor exit, according to the British censor. (AP Photo)
