The first convoy for many months got through to besieged Malta in March 4, 1942, and it made the passage under ceaseless air and sea attack. One of the 4 ships was sunk when 10 miles south of the island, and another, the Breconshire, was hit when almost home. She was towed by tugs into a bay southward of the Grand Harbour, but was again hit, and sank with her valuable cargo of oil fuel. The fight putup by the Breconshire on this the last of her many arduous passages to Malta was characteristic of the Stalwart determination of her commanding officer, Captain C.A.G. Hutchinson. She is struck by a bomb when nearly home. The cruiser Penelope fixes a line and tries to tow her into harbour, on March 4, 1942. (AP Photo)
