A Service of Thanksgiving for the life of Diana, Princess of Wales, The Guards Chapel, St James's Park, London, Britain - 31 Aug 2007
A service to mark the 10th anniversary of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales took place today at the Guards' Chapel in London. The service had been organised by Princes William and Harry who were outside the chapel to welcome Prince Charles and members of the Spencer family. The Queen and Prince Philip were also in attendance. Other guests at the hour long service included Gordon Brown, Tony Blair, John major, Richard Attenborough, Elton John, Cliff Richard, and Richard Branson. The guest list included over 110 representatives from various charities and organisations with which the Princess was associated with. The service was opened by the Rev Patrick Irwin with the words: "We are gathered here to remember with love and gratitude Diana, Princess of Wales." Harrods owner Mohamed Al Fayed, whose son Dodi died in the crash, was one of the notable people who was missing. Having not been invited to the ceremony he instead laid flowers at a shrine that has been built at his Harrods store in Knightsbridge. The store also came to a standstill as a two minute silence, with the multimillionaire standing behind the store's famous statue, was also conducted. The Duchess of Cornwall Camilla Parker Bowles was also absent. The ceremony has been overshadowed in recent weeks by speculation over whether Camilla would attend. It had been thought that she would be there, but in a statement earlier this week she pulled out at the last minute commenting her attendance "could divert attention from the purpose of the occasion". The service included a reading by Diana's sister, Lady Sarah McCorquodale, as well as by Prince William who read the 23rd Psalm and Prince Harry. I
