It has reportedly been seized by Russian military forces, according to regional authorities. An update written at 7.30am on the State Inspectorate for Nuclear Regulation of Ukraine???s Facebook page reads: ??sThe Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant is captured by the military forces of the Russian Federation.??? The inspectorate states that units two and three at the power plant have been disconnected from the network and and nuclear installations are being cooled down. Operational personnel continue to work for the control the safe condition of the power units. The Zaporizhzhya plant was partially on fire in the early hours of Friday morning - although it was believed that the fire was in an administrative building, rather than a reactor. However, the incident has caused international concern - including in a call between Ukraine???s President and the White House. ??sPOTUS spoke with President Zelenskyy this evening to receive an update on the fire at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant,??? the White House tweeted. According to these experts if things go wrong at the plant, the loss of cooling nuclear fuel may lead to ??ssignificant radioactive emissions into the environment??? and such an event ??smay outgrow all previous NPP accidents, including the Chernobyl NPP and Fukusima-Daichi NPP??? Damage to a reservoir of processed nuclear fuel as a result of the shelling will also lead to radioactive discharge. Chernobyl, a plant in the north of Ukraine, infamously caused a nuclear accident in 1986, which is considered the worst nuclear disaster in history both in cost and casualties.
