They built their home from scratch using wood from the tress and other materials. BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA: MEET THE family who moved off-the-grid where they hunt and live off the land - and they say it's protected them from COVID. Full-time land owners Jeff (40) and Rose Burkinshaw (41) from British Columbia, Canada, met whilst they were in school and quickly became childhood sweethearts. The duo tied the knot when they were just 19-years-old and went on to have five children together: Sarah (20), Abigail (18), Julia (16), Christina (14) and Keziah (11). The family grew up in the suburbs, where Jeff and Rose worked 9-5 jobs as an electrical engineering technologist and legal secretary. However, Jeff grew tired of the commute to work and school where the family knew that something needed to change. As Jeff?s job allowed him to move around a bit, the family took the plunge and moved out to their first acreage in 2003. As they wanted to go in with no expectations, they started off with nothing and initially camped on the land. Soon, they slowly started to develop their dwelling and although they lacked some comforts such as electricity and running water, they always viewed this as having temporary deficiencies. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the family were amazed at how little they were affected due to their off-grid lifestyle. As they are used to providing for their own needs and are almost completely isolated from the world around them, they were put in a position to be protected without posing any challenges or changes for the family. However, throughout this time they have had people contact them and ?jokingly? invite themselves to their place should the situation get any worse in the city. Due to this, the family believe that the COVID-19 pandemic has made people realise how fragile society is and that we should all take steps towards living a more simple, sustainable and self-sufficient lifestyle.
