Teacher Shayne Phil (34) from Singapore, Southeast Asia, was diagnosed with mild eczema when he was just three years old after he developed red, itchy patches all over his body and face. Shortly after being diagnosed, he was prescribed topical steroid creams such as betamethasone - which helps reduce inflammation of the skin - and oral steroids such as prednisone - which suppresses the immune system - and used these for a total of 13 years. At 16-years-old, Shayne?s doctor informed him that prolonged use of steroids can damage the immune system, so switched him to protopic - an oral immunosuppressant which helps combat inflammation - but after six years, Shayne?s skin began to deteriorate again. Shayne began experiencing uncomfortable flare ups every three months which would initially leave his skin severely dry and wrinkled and then turn red, angry and inflamed within a few days. As he was constantly experiencing signs of eczema with no end in sight, Shayne made the decision to quit all medication completely in September 2020. Shayne felt that he had made the best decision for not only his body, but also for his mental health, until one week later when he began experiencing inflamed and dry skin across his body, which escalated into severely itchy and crusty skin across his face that was comparable to an ?eczema beard? which would bleed and ooze pus. At his worst, he remembers locking himself up in his room for days and he felt isolated from the world. As his condition worsened to the point where he was experiencing hair loss and constant skin shedding, he didn?t step out of the house for three months.
