Kristina Sanford, 48, lives with boyfriend Jason Cortright, 46, in Henderson, Las Vegas. She is also mum to two older sons who no longer live at home. The retired US Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant purchased her seven-bedroom home in April 2020 and immediately began transforming the dull space into a vibrant and colourful pad, filled with interesting artworks. Kristina was inspired to decorate it with bold colours after being forced to retire from the military when she developed psoriatic arthritis????" realising you have to "make life fun when you can". "When we first bought our home, it was painted in a very typical Las Vegas beige in every single room," Kristina told Jam Press. "My medical condition really opened my eyes to how quickly life can shift without warning, and made me realise how important it is to make life fun when you can. ??sSo I really wanted an environment that's fun, upbeat and silly but functional.??? Kristina drew inspiration from pop culture, art history, movies and TV shows and began painting the walls of her home in honour of some iconic characters ??" including Star Wars' Darth Vader and even Milhouse from The Simpsons. The mum said: "Pop culture holds a lot of nostalgia and escapism for me and there are elements of movies and TV here and there in the house, as well as nods to various style periods from the 50s to the 90s. "Jason helped me every step of the way; from painting the larger areas of colour to bouncing ideas off of him to handling all the carpentry and encouraging my creative vision. ??sThis is the first creative project I've ever voluntarily collaborated on and as a serious control freak it's been a much-needed growth experience for me.??? Stand-out features of the home include an entirely red room which has ornaments from horror movies such as A Nightmare On Elm Street. Kristina said: "I have a lot of stuff I've collected over the years, so we decided to make that the showcase for all of it." Meanwhile, the upstairs guest bathroom is a "visual assault of the tacky side of Vegas" complete with gold coins and dollar bills pinned to the wall ??" and even a gemmed toilet seat. The mum now loves her "fun" and "vibrant" home, which perfectly reflects her bright personality ??" although she's made sure to keep the outside of the house very conventional. She said: "There's also lots of glitter, a disco ball, flashing lights, cards, poker chips... it's absolutely obnoxious. ??sI seem serious and reserved when you first meet me but inside I'm pretty kooky, kind of weird, a bit overwhelming sometimes but always fun.??? Her favourite part is the hallway, which features a large mural in dedication to actor and filmmaker, Tommy Wiseau. Kristina added: "It's just so ridiculous and random and always makes me smile. "I'd really say we're probably only two-thirds of the way done. "There's still so much to be 'crazy-fied' like the doors and flooring ??" I sincerely believe this may turn into the aesthetic equivalent of the Winchester mansion. ??sWe'll still be adding and changing things 30 years from now and our friends hope we never have to sell it!???
