The House Where Rock Lived
As iconic rock locations go there are a few places in the world that have gone down in music history; think New York's Chelsea Hotel, where Sid Vicious' girlfriend Nancy Spungen met her grisly end, or Redlands, the infamous drug bust country home of Rolling Stone Keith Richards.
But Flat 1, 34 Montagu Square, in London's exclusive Marylebone area, may just have a rock 'n' roll history to rival them all.
This is the location of a flat that has seen some of the most iconic names in music history pass through its doors; McCartney, Hendrix and Lennon, to name but a few.
And now the rock 'n' roll pad has received a prestigious English Heritage blue plaque to mark the months that John Lennon and Yoko Ono spent living there in 1968.
Unveiled by Ono herself, it marks the first ever such plaque for a London property lived in by a member of The Beatles. It is also only the second ever of the historic plaques installed on a property lived in by a rock star.
Coincidentally, the first is in Brook Street to mark the home of Jimi Hendrix who was also, for a time, an inhabitant of 34 Montagu Square.
It was Ringo Starr who first leased the apartment in 1965 when England's capital was in full swing, choosing it for its ideal location near The Beatles' spiritual home of Abbey Road Studios.
But when the drummer moved to a new home outside of London with his first wife Maureen he decided to keep on the lease of the property, which spans the basement and ground floor.
From then on the flat, which is part of an elegant 19th century townhouse, was at the very heart of the British music scene.
Starr's bandmate Paul McCartney moved in the following year, installing reel-to-reel recording equipment as part of a studio hideaway, and it is here that he is said to have worked on Eleanor Rigby. Be...
