WYPCHANA OWCA DOLLY
PHOTO: EAST NEWS/REX FEATURES Dolly, the world's first cloned mammal, is to go on display at the Royal Museum in Edinburgh from Friday as part of the Scottish city's International Science Festival (9 April). Dolly, an icon of scientific and technological breakthrough, died in February this year and was donated to the National Museums of Scotland by the Roslin Institute to be preserved for future generations. The world's most famous sheep will now play a key role in the Science Zone, an innovative series of events and workshops, at the Royal Museum. Now stuffed, Dolly will form part of an exhibition focusing on the 50th anniversary of the discovery of DNA by James Watson and Francis Crick. "We are grateful to the Roslin Institute for ensuring that the symbol of one of history's greatest scientific breakthroughs remains in Scotland," said Director of the National Museums of Scotland Dr Gordon Rintoul. "Dolly is a striking reminder of Scotland's record of scientific achievement, and her contribution can now be recognised for many centuries to come." The sheep will be displayed alongside Morag who has been on display since November 2000. Morag was cloned from an embyro cell in a laboratory, paving the way for the cloning of Dolly from an adult cell. After the Science Zone, Dolly will be on display at the Museum of Scottish Country Life at Kittochside, near Eat-Kilbride before being returned to the Royal Museum for permanent display.
