Red Cross workers meet with residents, as part of the Home Water Treatment project Ãł known by its French acronym TED (Traitement de l'Eau à Domicile) Ãł in the Savane district of Matoury, French Guiana, on June 6, 2026. Launched as a pilot in 2025 within the regional health agency's (ARS) 2024–2028 environmental health plan, the TED project supports families who lack secure access to drinking water, teaching them simple, low-cost methods Ãł chiefly chlorination and proper storage Ãł to cut the health risks of consuming untreated water. In French Guiana, around 15 percent of the population is not connected to the public drinking-water network, drawing instead on rainwater, wells, creeks or rivers. The approach relies on door-to-door support: meetings with families, practical demonstrations, tailored advice and home follow-up. (Photo by Ronan LIÉTAR / AFP)
