Women work daily harvesting salt in the traditional hand-dug salt wells known locally as "puits a sel" in Palmarin, within the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site of the Saloum Delta, located on the Atlantic coast approximately 150 kilometers southeast of Dakar, Senegal on June 3, 2026, where from the air the thousands of individually dug wells form colorful abstract patterns of pink, purple and orange shaped by sunlight, algae and changing water levels, while on the ground women carry heavy baskets of salt on their shoulders for hours under intense heat, with salt production remaining a key source of income for many families in the region despite the harsh working conditions.
