After four days of wandering the Forest of Dean over Easter weekend 2026, photographer John Wells finally struck gold deep in the woodland with a full squad of wild boar piglets. Following faint rustles, fresh tracks and subtle signs of activity, the moment came together as a surprisingly large group shuffled into view, likely made up of multiple litters, snuffling their way along a quiet forest path.
Staying low, still and downwind, the photographer spent about an hour with the youngsters as they carried on completely unfazed, rooting around, exploring and even edging closer. It was a first time photographing wild boar, making the encounter even more special, as the piglets moved calmly and confidently through the woods, turning days of patience into a rare, up close glimpse of life in the wild.
