TO GO WITH AFP STORY by Florent VERGNES
A wall of stacked shipping containers is pictured at the port of Sisimiut, Greenland, on March 14, 2026. The Sarfaq Ittuk is a vital and iconic coastal ferry for Greenlanders, keeping small west coast communities connected to low cost. It links Qaqortoq in the south to Ilulissat in the north in a week-long journey. This year, an unusually warm January allowed the ferry to reach Ilulissat much earlier than usual, as the town is normally blocked by sea ice in March. Around 200 passengers travel on board for medical needs, work, tourism, or simply to meet people. But with new airports opening and a lack of investors, the future of the Sarfaq Ittuk is increasingly uncertain. (Photo by Florent VERGNES / AFP)
