A project which proposes to build the tallest skyscraper in the United States has received height approval from Oklahoma City, where the building is set to scrape the skies. AO Architects – who helm the building’s design alongside Matteson Capital – announced in a press release that The Oklahoma City Planning Commission granted approval on a height increase for their Legends Tower. “On behalf of AO, we are extremely pleased that the Oklahoma City Planning Commission has unanimously approved the requested unlimited height limit and has granted the development team the ability to negotiate on a comprehensive signage program for the Boardwalk at Bricktown,” AO managing partner Rob Budetti said in a statement. “This endorsement underscores our confidence in the vision and design of this landmark development, representing Oklahoma City's imminent transformation into a global destination and its bold stride towards the future.” However, Matteson Capital noted a final vote is planned for the City Council in June. The Legends Tower is set to rise over a mixed-use development of four towers in total, called Boardwalk at Bricktown. The mixed uses for the development have currently been allocated to two Hyatt hotels, residential units, and retail and restaurants. While three of the towers in the development will rise to 345 feet (105 metres) tall, the fourth tower – named the Legends Tower – will stand at 1,907 feet (581 metres) tall. This skyscraper would break the current record for the tallest tower in the United States of America, currently awarded to the 1,776-foot-tall (541 metres) One World Trade Centre in New York. It would also mark the sixth tallest skyscraper in the world, behind the Burj Khalifa in Dubai (2,717 feet, or 828 metres), Merdeka 118 in Kuala Lumpur (2,228 feet, or 679 metres), Shanghai Tower in Shanghai (2,073 feet, or 631 metres), Makkah Royal Clock Tower in Mecca (1,972 feet, or 601 metres), and the Ping An Finance Center in Shenzhen (1,965 feet, or 599 metres). “Upon completion, the Boardwalk at Bricktown will undoubtedly earn the city the recognition it deserves, setting a new standard for urban innovation and architectural excellence,” Rob continued in his statement. “We are excited about the positive impact this project will have on shaping the future of Oklahoma City.” The original design proposed a 1,750-foot-tall (533 metres) Legends Tower, which would have ranked as the second tallest skyscraper in the US. According to The Oklahoman local news outlet, the project secured its full funding of $1.5 billion (£1.2 billion) in early March. Developer Scot Matterson estimated at the time that site preparation for the development could begin as early as June this year. “Oklahoma City is experiencing a significant period of growth and transformation, making it well-positioned to support large-scale projects like the one envisioned for Bricktown,” Scot said in a previous statement. “We believe that this development will be an iconic destination for the city, further driving the expansion and diversification of the growing economy, drawing in investment, new businesses, and jobs. It’s a dynamic environment and we hope to see The Boardwalk at Bricktown stand as the pride of Oklahoma City.” When: 03 Dec 2023 Credit: AO Architects/Cover Media **EDITORIAL USE ONLY.
