Firefighters in London responded to a call after a passerby spotted a furry creature hidden under an unused pier along the River Thames. A fox had nested itself into a pier’s wooden support beams while water flowed safely beneath him. As the water receded with the tide, the animal was stuck high above the muddy ground with no way down. The tide’s eventual return threatened to wash away Thamesmead’s furry friend until the London Fire Brigade arrived. “With the tide going out and the mud so deep, the scared fox found itself in a bit of a pickle. But thanks to the swift action of the brigade, a mud path was created to reach the fox who had been stuck for over 4.5 hours,” a spokesperson for The Fox Project later recounted on Facebook. “When the firefighters finally got close, the fox must have decided they were more frightening than the tides.” Firefighters attempted to pluck the fox off the pier without causing additional stress, but the animal scurried away before they could close in. The spokesperson continued in the statement, “It leapt down and made a run for it, dashing across the mud banks, along the river, and up to safety. Phew!” Neither the fox nor his rescuers were injured. The Fox Project organisation were “incredibly grateful” to firefighters “for their quick and brave assistance”, asserting, “Without them, this fox might have been in real trouble with the tide coming back in.” Red foxes, also known by their latin name Vulpes vulpes, are abundant in London city. According to the Los Angeles Times, the species began encroaching on the urban area in the 1930s. British suburbs expanded into fox territory in the countryside, and the animals responded by venturing into the inner city. Today, Britain is home to about 33,000 urban foxes - making up 14% of the country’s entire fox population. “Let's hope our adventurous fox has learned its lesson and decides to stay away from that pier in the future,” The Fox Project spokesperson concluded. “Thank you, London Fire Brigade, for keeping our wildlife safe!” The Fox Project is a wildlife organisation aiming to rehabilitate red foxes in the area. According to The Dodo, Thamesmead neighbours haven’t spotted the fox on the pier again since the rescue. However, they reportedly suspect the animal is still roaming around London.
