A puffin pool party! Puffins are seen floating and paddling in the deep waters off the coasts of the Farne Islands in Northumberland. The puffed out birds have returned to the area having been at sea for the winter.
Brian Matthews used underwater camera and diving gear to capture the photos. He said, “There are around 100,000 puffins arriving back to check their burrows and find their partners, they stay together for life but separate in the winter till they meet again in the spring.”
“Over a million puffins will be back around the UK now, ready to breed. It's worth noting that the puffins are back in the UK after a long winter at sea.”

The supported by recent news about the banning of industrial sandeels fishing it could be great year for the puffins. Worth including that the puffins are back in the U.K. after a winter at sea.
When were the shots taken? Farne islands in Northumberland in north east England.
2. Was it easy/hard to get the shots and why? Extremely difficult. I’m in the water with my underwater camera set up (using an underwater housing) using a 70-200mm lens (much longer than you normally use for in water work) I was in the water for 2 hours at a time in a 7mm wetsuit. I was able to get very close to about 1000 puffins rafting around the Farne islands.
3. What is your favourite thing about the shots? To get something different of puffins is nearly impossible but using this set up I did. Being in the water early morning with thousands of puffins was amazing. Some came up to me (within a metre)
