Fishermen make use of all limbs, at times using their legs to steer their boat or through the net quickly into the water. The Intha fishermen of Inle Lake in Myanmar's Shan state have evolved this unique rowing and fishing style. Medical doctor Hilton Chen, 57, from Seattle, Washington, USA said, "Standing at the stern of their boat they wrap one leg around an oar and push in a circular direction to propel their boat. This also frees one hand and one foot to operate the funnel shaped fishing net that they use to dunk into the water when they spot shoals of fish below." "Inle is a shallow lake, with a maximum depth of 2 metres, so the fishermen plunge their funnel shaped nets forcefully into the water with the aid of their foot. Once the net reaches the bottom the trapped fish panic and scatter in all directions, and many end up being snared in the net. The catch is either taken home or sold at the local fish market." "Many fishermen still practice this traditional fishing technique in Myanmar today. I was sitting on the stern of the boat while the fisherman was standing on the bow. Their unique rowing style combined with the conical fishing net makes for a very photogenic image." While a few of the fishermen have made part of their living posing as photo subjects, many still practice this traditional fishing technique in Myanmar today, especially with the current drought in their tourism industry due to the ongoing civil war 1) The images were taken in October 2023 2) I was sitting on the stern of the boat while the fisherman was standing on the bow. 3) The catch is either taken home or sold at the local fish market 4) Their unique rowing style combined with the conical fishing net makes for a very photogenic image. As you saw in the action shot sequence, the poses in the first set of images are not purely fictional, they are based upon reality as the fishermen goes about their daily life of navigating their boats while fishing at the same time. 5) Hilton Anthony Chen, age 57, medical doctor, and I live in Seattle, Washington state, USA.
