Dusting Elephants

BEAUTIFUL IMAGES of elephants dusting themselves have been captured.
Images show elephants throwing massive dust clouds around themselves with their trunks to cool off, dry themselves and remove insects from their skin.
These images were captured by engineer Gurcharan Roopra (44) from Nairobi Kenya.
Gurcharcan captured the elephants in wildlife parks across Kenya including Amboseli national Park and Kimana Reserve, Gurcharan used a combination of Nikon cameras including the Z30, Z9, Z7ii and Z7 to get the best angles.
“The elephants are from the Amboseli ecosystem and Amboseli National Park, Kenya. I have been spending a lot of time in Amboseli for the sole reason to photograph elephant behaviour,” said Gurcharan.
“Capturing them throwing dust has been a really big one for me. Usually the elephants dust themselves to get rid of insects off their skin and in some instances to cool or dry.
“I was at my favourite camp called Tulia Amboseli camp, and they have a waterhole where the guests can watch elephants, they come there daily, drink water, scrub in the mud nearby, then dust themselves and carry on with eating activities.
“Firstly, I love the elephants, I would photograph all their behaviours, but I really love the drama of the dust as it blows all over the place, how it reflects light.
“I still have tonnes more ideas and hope will be able to execute them with the help of the elephants.
“I have a lot of favourite shots, the high key side profile of the elephant dusting itself, and of course the one of Craig as he sleeps under the tree and wakes up every so often to cool his underbody.
“For the side profile that was the first time I had taken out an experimental camera, the Z30, where Nikon had asked me to get something special with it.
“With Craig under the tree, he is one of the most spectacular tuskers in Kenya, his formidable tusks and the character of a cool calm saint, he is such a magical being. Thank you for giving me the opportunities of capturing you.
“It’s a special feeling to spend time with these gentle giants, they are so calm yet so powerful.
“Many are left speechless and usually wow is the only word that comes out.”
