Anna Nevina (24) a model and student from Switzerland was born with a port wine stain birthmark on her face. A port-wine stain is a type of birthmark, it looks like maroon wine was spilled or splashed on the skin. Though they often start out looking pink at birth, port-wine stains tend to become darker (usually reddish-purple or dark red) as kids grow. Anna always had a dream of being an actress but children at school would tease her that no one wanted to look at her face on the big screen. Luckily Anna has a very supportive family who always supported her creative ambitions and now she is proving naysayers wrong modelling for Balmain, Levis and even appearing in British Vogue. “I have a port wine stain - in German it’s called a fire mark which I like better than the English term for it,” said Anna. “I've had it since I was born. It was just always there and you don't really care so much as a kid. “Other children and people were looking at me but I think my parents noticed that more than I did myself. “Now as an adult I notice the negativity, the number of times random people have asked me if I was burned or stung by an insect or even if somebody punched me is uncountable. “People say ‘you’re a model now because everyone feels bad for you because of your face it is ridiculous. “Sometimes I wish I could spend a day without being made aware of how different I look to anyone else. “When I was younger and to this day I dream of being an actress. Many people told me that I wouldn’t have a chance in this field because of how I look. “I believed them and didn’t pursue acting work. It's more or less the truth because I don’t know a single actress with a birthmark, well at least not yet. “It definitely affected my confidence. I was bullied when I was younger but this was not necessarily only because of my birthmark. “Unfortunately, so many people get bullied and there is nothing you can really put your finger on and say ‘that's why’ “I still struggle with my confidence sometimes, but also I can’t change it and I don't think that I should let this affect my life in a negative way, I am so lucky to have the opportunities that I do. “It’s easy to find excuses not to do things and as a person that has the privilege to have the freedom of doing whatever I want to do in my life I feel like my looks shouldn't define the things I can and can’t do. “I think having a birthmark has shaped my life. Especially as a teenager, it was difficult. When everyone around me started having their first relationships and I still stood alone I blamed it on my birthmark. “But who’s to say that it was even because of that? As long as I blamed my birthmark, I kept on being unconfident and hiding my true self." Anna has always had a very supportive family and they encouraged her to pursue creative work. “I have a really amazing family. My parents supported my creativity from a really early age,” she said. “After high school my mind was split between pursuing a career in the creative field or studying medicine. I’ve always been really interested in fashion, I sometimes design and sew my own clothes. “I dressed really differently than the people around me which when I was younger was often ridiculed but now I get a lot of appreciation for my sense of style. “I posted re-enactment videos of things that happen to me on a daily basis because of my birthmark. I tried to film them in a funny and non serious way to entertain people. “My videos blew up on TikTok and got millions of views. I got so many positive and uplifting comments which was almost a surprise because I am aware of how mean people can be on social media. “Shortly after that people in the fashion world as well as photographers started reaching out to me and asked me if I’d like to work with them for a photoshoot, art project or even fashion shows. “I took these opportunities and in a short time, I built a diverse modelling portfolio. Soon modelling agencies from different countries started reaching out to me. “During the pandemic modelling agencies had to adjust their way of scouting new faces and many of them started scouting on social media. “Many of the ones who scouted me, rejected me after I told them my height. Unsurprisingly there are some guidelines regarding height in modelling and I’m only 5’6’’ it would be difficult to find clients in the fashion industry.
