A crew uses an oil drilling rig to abandon an oil well, permanently closing it with a plug and cement, at a site in Alliance, Alberta. Willie Bradley spent years drilling wells but he now oversees teams using drilling rigs to close them instead. "With the price of oil where it is, these suspended wells are hanging by a thread," Bradley said, "They all claim that if the price comes back then these wells will be economic again. Will they? I don't know."
Then a site is supposed to be remediated and reclaimed, cleaning all waste and contamination, and returning the site to its original state as a farm field, forest or fallow ground.
"Every well is different," said Willie Bradley, who was overseeing the abandonment, "We always do the best we can." "From the 80's to the 90's to the 2000's, the industry has changed. Industry standards have changed," he reflects, "I can't imagine 10, 20, 30 years from now ho everything is gonna change again."
