The official torches for the 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympics in Milan have been unveiled. The torches, crafted by the renowned Studio Carlo Ratti Associati, have been dubbed 'Essential' for their commitment to reducing environmental impact. Built primarily from recycled materials, including an aluminium and brass alloy, each torch weighs around 1,060 grams, excluding the fuel canister. Remarkably, the torches can be reused up to ten times, a strategic choice aimed at reducing the number of torches needed for relay events and minimising material waste. Carlo Ratti's design introduces a fresh approach to Olympic torch aesthetics, with the use of a cutting-edge technique known as physical vapor deposition. This method creates a reflective, iridescent surface that changes its appearance based on the surrounding light. The torch’s color and reflectivity shift as it moves, creating a dynamic and eye-catching visual effect. For the first time, the open-frame design exposes the torch's internal mechanical components, a stark departure from the traditional, enclosed structures that hide the flame mechanism. Two distinct torches have been designed for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, each with its own unique colour scheme. The Olympic torch gleams in ‘Shades of Sky,’ inspired by Italy’s natural landscapes and symbolising movement and transformation. Meanwhile, the Paralympic torch is bathed in ‘Mountains of Light,’ a tribute to the strength and resilience of Paralympic athletes. The grip of each torch is constructed from XL EXTRALIGHT, a lightweight polymer developed by Finproject. Not only is this material durable, but it’s also made from 60% bio-naphtha, derived from renewable raw materials. The lightweight design is intended to minimize fatigue for torchbearers during the relay, allowing for a more comfortable and efficient experience. Fueling the torches is a bio-LPG system powered by renewable raw materials, including waste products such as used cooking oils, animal fats, and agricultural byproducts. This sustainable approach aligns with the overall ethos of the 'Essential' torch project, which combines recycled metals, bio-derived polymers, waste-sourced fuels, and reusability into a single innovative design. Once the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics come to a close, the Essential torches will join the esteemed collection of Olympic torches at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland, marking another milestone in Olympic history.
