Hann Bay, which stretches around 14 kilometres, used to be known as one of the most beautiful bays in West Africa, lined with traditional fishing villages, villas, and tourist attractions. For the last 20 years Hann Bay has been at the centre of Dakar’s industrialization with 80 percent of the industry located in this area. Today it is one of Dakar’s most polluted areas, with canals spilling raw sewage and chemicals onto the beach and into the sea. A build up of plastic and materials penetrates meters deep into the sand. Some families have banned their children from swimming and using the beach. Many people fall ill with skin diseases, gastroenteritis and respiratory issues.
