A Militiaman from the Force de Resistance Patriotique de l'Ituri (FRPI) stands guard at their base in Bukiringi on January 6, 2022 to protect the Walendu Bindi chiefdom from attacks by other armed groups in southern Ituri province, northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo. - Since May 2021 and the surge in violence in the area, FRPI fighters have twice clashed with the ADF - Allied Democratic Forces - rebels, who have pledged allegiance to the Islamic State, on the outskirts of Bukiringi. Since early 2020, massacres of civilians, village burnings, and attacks on vehicles have been committed by various armed factions here in the southern Irumu territory, the border between North Kivu and Ituri provinces, around the villages of Tchabi and Boga. These attacks, perpetrated mainly by the ADF rebels, sometimes in coalition with armed Hutu civilians, have resulted in the deaths of several dozen people and the fleeing of tens of thousands of inhabitants of the area.
