A squirrel sores through the air as it swoops from branch to branch in a forest. The ezo flying squirrel, is a subspecies endemic to the area of Hokkaido, Japan.
Office worker Hiroki Takahashi from Sapporo, Japan said, “This is a unique species that only lives in Hokkaido. They were first officially recorded here in 1921 and are mostly nocturnal and live in trees.”
“The squirrels fly very fast, reaching up to 40 miles an hour. Because of this, they are very difficult to photograph as they move from tree to tree in an instant. In Japan they are loved as cute animals, known locally as ezo momonga, but most people haven’t seen them before due to their evasive nature.”
