Aerial view of Almodovar del Rio castle in Vega del río Guadalquivir in Cordoba Province, Andalusia, southern Spain. The castle of Almodóvar del Río, located on top of a promontory, just 24 kilometers west of Córdoba, dominates the view around it, rising almost vertically from the Vega of the Guadalquivir river. It is one of the most beautiful castles in Andalusia and one of the best preserved in all of Spain. Its origins date back to Roman and Visigothic times. It was founded in the 8th century, specifically in the year 760, but it owes most of its current appearance to the reconstruction after the Reconquest, when the Moors built a fortress called Al-Mudawwar, the name from which Almodóvar evolved, the current name from town. The castle played a very important role in the defense of Córdoba due to its strategic location from which views of the river were dominated, which at that time was navigable by small boats. The fortress passed into Spanish hands under the crown of Ferdinand III in 1240 and since then it has been used by different kings. Visitors can climb several of its nine watchtowers, although the most impressive is undoubtedly the Torre del Homenaje, in which the dungeon is located.
