AMUSING images show a tree hugging cheetah looking like he is displaying his love for Mother Nature.
The images were captured early in the early morning at Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, South Africa by local teacher Johan Wandrag (56).
Johan uses a Canon EOS 7D Mk ii and a Sigma 150 – 600 contemporary lens to capture his wildlife photography.
Johan spent about 30 minutes out in the wildlife park capturing these terrific images, which despite the humorous way most people would interpret them, in fact show the big cat marking its territory.
He stayed around 160 ft away from the cheetahs, a brave man considering a cheetah can perceive prey by scent from 16,404 ft away.
The ritual of scent marking for cheetahs is a way of communicating with other carnivores, they leave their scent on prominent landmarks in the area, depositing their scent through a mixture of scratching, rubbing and urinating.
Scent marking allows cheetahs to lay claim to their own territory, warning off others or obtain information about rivals entering their landscape.
The cheetah puts on a display for Johan and at certain points it looks like he is hugging the tree, an image which happens to be his favorite.
“The shot where it look like its hugging the tree, I haven’t seen a photo like that before.” said Johan
“What makes wildlife photography such a rewarding hobby/job is you never know what will happen when you are out in the bush, or what you will see.
“It is always rewarding to capture something seldomly seen, so I was very excited to see how it came out.”
Cheetahs are historically renowned for their speed and as the fastest land mammal at 70mph, Johan was lucky to catch the predator in a moment of peace.
