Volker Miros founder of Woodford Truffles inspects the roots of an Oak sapling to see how much the truffle has colonised, in the nursery on the family farm, where they cultivate Black Winter Perigord truffles in an orchard of specially-planted oak trees, close to the town of Ceres, in the Western Cape Province, on July 16, 2021. Some of these saplings are destined to be planted on other farms as part of the Woodford joint venture programme. - It took six years of trial-and-error, and tonnes of calcitic lime to redress soil acidity, before the first truffles were unearthed.
