An animal charity was left shocked after discovering an Afghan hound cruelly tied to a post, waiting to be slaughtered for the dog meat trade. Workers from NoToDogMeat discovered the Afghan hound tied outside the home of a butcher in a residential area of Beijing. It is believed that the unfortunate animal was being "fattened up" by the butcher, prior to being slaughtered. In spite of this, the Afghan was malnourished and scared when rescuers discovered her - and required treatment for a liver problem caused by starvation. The Afghan hound ??" popular show dogs, known for their beautiful coats - had to be shaved, as her fur become severely matted and out of condition. The Afghan, who has been named Anna, has found a home at the Charity???s Beijing rescue centre, along with 450 other dogs rescued by NoToDogMeat. It is hoped that Anna will be able to find a loving home in China or abroad, but she has a home for life at the shelter should she need one. In the UK, a pedigree Afghan hound puppy would cost an owner up to ?L1,500. "It is a mystery as to how such a fancy pedigree dog ended up in this awful predicament, but it just goes to show that there is no discrimination in some people's minds when it comes to eating dogs," Julia de Cadenet, CEO of the NoToDogMeat charity told Jam Press. "Pets are not food, and finding a dog like Anna must hammer home for people in the UK, that the dogs we rescue and care for are just the same as your dogs at home. "Our best guess is that Anna's original owner abandoned her during the pandemic, as so many people have done sadly in China, when false information spread about dogs carrying the virus. "But she has a happy life ahead of her, and has a home for life with us if she needs one," she added.
