Solidarity lawmakers vote to approve a stricter abortion law in the Parliament in Warsaw Wednesday Dec.17,1997. The Solidarity-controlled parliament on Wednesday endorsed a high court's decision overturning a liberalized abortion law that was criticized by Pope John Paul II. The vote reinstates strict abortion rules introduced in 1993 and supported by the Roman Catholic church. They were replaced in 1996 by a liberalized law allowing women to seek abortion in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy if they were deemed to face financial or emotional difficulties if they had a child.
