Only 10% to 15% of the tens of thousands of children living in the slum regularly attend school, access to which is hampered by staggering poverty and lack of infrastructure. "Most of the parents are illiterate and, even if they had the means, would not even have the reflex to send their children to the local school," says a humanitarian who has been active in the slum for several years.
