Devil Anse Hatfield was in his 40's when his brother Ellison was fatally shot and stabbed by three McCoys of Kentucky. The shooting touched off a backwoods family feud between the Hatfields of West Virginia led by Devil Anse (officially William Anderson,) and the McCoys. The feud raged from 1882 to 1888; estimates of deaths range from 27 to 100. This is a photograph of Devil Anse, of unknown date. (AP Photo)
