In erecting a tower, the Mongolians select a spot regarded as sacred. Fancy does not count in choosing the site. The tower is not a mere ornament, but is believed symbolize the Holy High, protection, exorcise of evil, invocation of blessing, and plentiful corps. Inside the tower, Buddha's images, Buddhist codes, and cereals are deposited. Sometimes the ashes of some revered priests, too, are included. Lama Tower at Olonsmu in Chahar shown in 1936 was built in the Chienlung Era of the Manchu Dynasty and its likes are come across here and there. It is of typical design. (AP Photo)
