Girls are opening American Red Cross floor sacks preparatory to their manufacture into clothing in Marseilles, France on Sept. 26, 1941. When someone saw the sacks being emptied of their flour and suggested that they might be of use as cloth, the idea was favorably received by the Red Cross and they were donated. The Red Cross presented the French with 200,000 sacks "Almost Empty" -- almost empty because in shaking them thoroughly before giving them a washing, sixty pounds of flour was gleaned from every 5,000 sacks. From the sacks, dresses have been made for little girls and knitted cotton pants for babies, in fact, entire layettes for youngsters have been manufactured. Some 20,000 bibs have been made from the string with which the sacks are sewed. (AP Photo)
