In this railway car, enclosed in a building in Compiegne Forest, France on June 21, 1940, French delegates met Adolf Hitler and heard his terms of an armistice on June 21. It is the same car in which Marshal Foch, generalissimo of the Allied forces during the World War, dictated in 1918 the terms on which Germany laid down her arms. Of the June 21 meeting, DNB, German news agency, said, "The dignity of the action toward an enemy honorably defeated stands in contrast to the eternal hate-sowing monuments at this place where Gallic baseness once shamed the undefeated German army.
