The orangutans are the two exclusively Asian species of extant great apes. Native to Indonesia and Malaysia, orangutans are currently found in only the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra. USA AN ADORABLE baby orangutan can be seen hanging from its mum’s belly at Zoo Atlanta in the USA, but you would never know the pair are, in fact, not related by blood. Orangutan mum Madu is a heroic foster mother, having adopted and raised four orangutan babies who were either rejected by their biological mothers or separated from them due to tragedy. A few months ago, Madu accepted a five-month-old infant Sumatran orangutan, Nangka, shortly after his arrival at the zoo. His biological mother was not providing appropriate care for the little one at Sacramento Zoo, and it became imperative that the baby orangutan be moved under the care of a more responsible ape mother. Madu can be seen caring for the infants and loving them as her own in these images captured by freelance wildlife photographer Linda D. Lester (64). “She was an amazing mum and watched them and treated them as if they were hers,” she said. “I got so excited when I snapped these pictures and learnt about Madu. “She is the epitome of motherhood, for me, and I loved capturing the precious moments she spent with her foster kids as if they were her own. “She is so incredibly patient with them, even when they are all over her. “She kept a close eye on the young ones at all times and was just such a loving and attentive mother. “It was heartwarming to witness.” ENDS
