Girl, four, becomes youngest person to reach Mount Everest base camp
A four-year-old girl has become the youngest person to reach the Mount Everest base camp.
Pint-sized climber Zara Šifra accomplished the feat with her seven-year-old brother Saša.
Both siblings managed to make it to the camp, at an altitude of around 17,598 feet.
The young siblings did it with their dad David.
As there is around 50% less oxygen than found at sea level, David said he constantly checked on his children’s blood oxygen levels throughout.
David told https://whatsthejam.com : “Zara is for sure the youngest to carry out the climb.
“She didn’t have any support, she walked on her own.”
He added: “It took 18 days to reach the camp from Jiri.
“We got there at around 4pm on 1 January.
David said: “On the way back we went to Salleri, an estimated 100 kilometres, which we reached on January 10th.
“From there we took a jeep to Kathmandu.
“In total, we climbed over 20,000 metres, while the base camp is located at 5,364 metres above sea level.
“There was no problem during the climb, the acclimatisation went above average.
“Zara, thanks to her very good physical condition, even outpaced, with a few exceptions, hundreds of other climbers.
“Incredibly, Zara constantly received some gifts and congratulations from other trekkers.”
He added: “How is it possible that a four-year-old girl could physically and mentally manage something like this?”
Zara has Czech and Canadian citizenship and lives in Malaysia with her parents.
Mount Everest is the world’s highest mountain peak at 29,031 feet.
Prisha Lokesh Nikajoo held the record for being the youngest person to climb to Everest's base camp in 2023 when she was five-years-old.
