MOTE Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium MOTE, Marine Aquarium in Sarasota, which is the home of Hugh and Buffett, in Florida. Hugh and Buffett are both resident manatees, they were both born in human care and cannot be released back into the wild, they are now in their late 30s. They have become an essential part of manatee behavioral research for scientists and the manatee community at large. Essentially much of what we know about manatee intelligence has been learned through their training. Here Hugh has voluntarily turned on his back a very vulnerable position for the manatee and given his arm for taking blood. If you notice the toenails on his flipper, they are akin to their closest ancestor the elephant.
