LENNOXTOWN, SCOTLAND: STEP INSIDE this 1800's castle that was once used as a hospital for people with critical mental health problems until it was closed down after an abuse scandal and for burying patients in unmarked graves. Photos of the five-storey castle show the empty insides of the building, the bare frames of what were once staircases through the hospital, and the crumbled 50-foot walls that have fallen to the perils of time. The castle itself housed the nurses and its grounds provided accommodation for about 1,200 patients. Between the 1940s and 1960s, the hospital also had a maternity ward, where pop singer Lulu and footballer John Brown were both born. In the eighties, the hospital was reported to be providing poor care to its patients, with some malnourished and mistreated by staff, and was closed in 2002. Some former patients of the hospital have said that they were beaten, and dozens of children were buried in a mass grave in Lennoxtown. The photos were taken by urban explorer and photographer Grant Vincent, who found the castle 12-miles north of Glasgow. mediadrumimages/GrantVincent
