EXCLUSIVE: *NO NEW YORK POST, NEWS CORP OR RTL USAGES* Story from Jam Press (Scary Sea Creatures) // Pictured: A Sea Moth. // Seriously spooky sea creatures are 'frozen alive' by taxidermy artist ??" and the results are as scary as they are fascinating // With Halloween just around the corner, these taxidermy monsters are bound to leave you with a serious case of the chills. Full-time artist Jeroen, 47, who is based in the Netherlands regularly taxidermies some of the weirdest and most wonderful creatures from the depths of the ocean????" meaning they will stay in their original shape for hundreds of years. The artist began the unusual hobby in an effort to preserve beautiful and rare dead fish so that they won't be lost forever. Speaking to Jam Press, he said: ??sAt the age of 10, I found a dead pike in the river near where I lived. "I was so fascinated by this big and beautiful fish that I took it out of the water and smuggled it into my house ??" I think I already realised my parents would not like such a smelly dead fish in the house. "At first, I hid it under my bed and the next day I put clay around it in an attempt to preserve it. ??sThis was no success, of course, and my mother soon noticed the horrible smell coming from my bedroom. ??sWhen she looked in my room she immediately saw the maggots crawling from under my bed. So my first taxidermy attempt ended in tragedy; my mother threw it in the trash can.??? Despite the disaster of his first taxidermy project, Jeroen tried again????" but this time as an adult. He said: ??sMany years later, at the age of 30, I decided the time had come to finally preserve a fish properly. "I soon found out that in the field of taxidermy, fish are by far the most difficult animals to taxidermy. "There was a guy in my hometown who was a professional taxidermist and specialised in fish so I asked him if he could teach me the tricks of the trade. "I ended up working with him together in his studio for over two years.??? ??sBy then I had enough confidence to start taxidermy work on my own. Jeroen decided to focus on monster fish; river monsters like the Goliath Tigerfish from Congo or the Vampire fish from Guyana as well as the ??smost monstrous fish of all; deep-sea fish.??? The artist notes that this was no easy task, as getting fresh specimens of these fish can be a real challenge. Explaining the process of fish taxidermy, he said: "First, you need to remove all the flesh and leave only the skin, head, and fins. "These are preserved by different kinds of chemicals. I have invented my own secret recipe so the fish do not lose their original skin colour which usually happens in fish taxidermy. ??sThen I fill up the body with synthetic materials that have to fit exactly so the fish gets back its natural shape. "I also use epoxy and clay to bring back parts that have shrunk after drying. "Finally, I restore and paint damaged parts and cover the fish with clear lacquer. ??sOn regular fish, this process is comparably easy, but deep-sea fish are a whole different story. "Their skin is like no other fish ??" most of them have no scales ??" and they are extremely fragile. "Also fixing the lures on the head of an Angler fish is a real challenge. "An angler fish is a species of deep-sea fish that has a bioluminescent rod on its head which it uses to attract prey.??? The entire process can take the artist anywhere from a few days to a few weeks to finish. He said: ??sI like deep-sea fish the most, but they are very difficult to get. "I have contacts with fishermen all over the world and they keep all the strange and unusual deep-sea fish they catch. "They used to throw them overboard because they had no use for them, so they are happy I pay them a good price for these monstrous creatures.??? ??sI am one of the few persons in the world who taxidermies deep-sea fish. "Some museums have a few deep sea-fish in their collection but they keep them as wet specimens in a jar with alcohol. ??sFor me, deep-sea fish are the ultimate monster fish. "They live in eternal darkness in the depths of the sea and most of them have never been seen alive by humans.??? Jeroen said he has always had a passion for fish which is ??sin his blood.??? He added: ??sMy father was a marine biologist and crazy about fish. "He showed me his books full of photos of all kinds of fish. "As a young boy, I spent many hours just looking at all those amazing animals. I was fascinated the most by deep-sea fish. "They looked like real monsters with their huge teeth and menacing appearance!??? The artist launched an Instagram account, @monster_fish_taxidermy, eight months ago where he regularly showcases his fascinating works and has already amassed a whopping 33,000 followers. He said: ??sI had no idea so many people would like what I was doing. I guess people like to see real monsters. "A lot of people have no idea what dwells deep below in our oceans and with my work I can give them a glimpse of these amazing animals. ??sMost people really love my monster fish. The scarier, the better! "Especially the ones with big, nasty teeth. But I also get many reactions like 'I am never going swimming in the ocean again!'.??? Many of Jeroen's works are on temporary display in several museums and are not currently for sale, however, the artist may begin selling them to private collectors in the future. He is also currently working on a photo exhibition of his work for a museum in Russia.
