A betel nut palm on a farm outside of Dawei in Southern Myanmar on 22nd November 2017. The owners of this farm are plaitiffs in a case againt Eastern Mining Company (EMC) who operate the nearby Pauk Tine tin mine, which they accuse of causing massive damage to their land. This palm, on higher ground, has healthy roots, but the palms on lower ground have seen their roots completely covered by polluted silt washed into the farm during the monsoon season. The land owners accuse the mine of dumping huge amounts of waste into waterways upstream of their farm which caused the flooding and poisoning of their plantations. (Matt Grace for NRGI)
