EXCLUSIVE: **NO NEW YORK POST OR NEWS CORP USAGES** Mentor, 23, who suffered years of depression loses SIX STONE through HYPNOTHERAPY ??" swapping booze and high-calorie dishes for homemade meals ??" but STILL EATS takeaways A woman claims to have lost over six stone through hypnotherapy after years of depression led her to comfort eating ??" bingeing on takeaway meals and alcohol on student nights out. Lauren Bridgland, 23, from Kent has suffered from depression since the age of 14 and used to see food as a ??scomfort blanket??? to numb her pain. Her weight crept up even more during university, where she would eat snacks, fast food and takeaway meals regularly ??" alongside going on alcohol-fuelled nights out. ??sI gained the weight gradually over about six years,??? Lauren told Jam Press. ??sIt started when I was about 14 or 15 and I suffered from depression. ??sI???d buy a tube of Pringles for the way home from school and demolish the whole thing and then go and have dinner. ??sDuring the summer holidays I???d be out with my friends and we???d go to McDonald???s, KFC, Burger King. ??sWhen I got to university, the weight piled on because I wasn???t cooking homemade meals. ??sIt was just me so I couldn???t be bothered. The takeaway meals increased, plus you???d drink more alcohol because you were a student." The unhealthy eating habits caused Lauren's weight to spike, with the young woman weighing 19st and 5.5lbs at her heaviest. She felt miserable about her appearance, constantly trying to hide her body and this in turn made her mental health problems worse. When seeking help from a GP, Lauren recalls how she was asked if she had ever tried to lose weight and the experience stuck in her head. Lauren said: "The way they said it was so condescending and I just wanted to curl up into a little ball. "I felt horrible afterwards and that comment really stuck in my head. "???Had I at least tried???? Almost like I didn???t realise I was overweight. "I tried every month, I did all the fad diets you could imagine. Nothing ever worked. I felt trapped in a body I couldn???t change." Two years ago, something switched in Lauren's mind ??" as she decided to try something new to tackle her emotional connection to food: hypnotherapy. Lauren signed up for eight sessions with hypnotherapist Tanya Lawton to resolve the link between happiness and bad food choices (?L45 per session). She said: ??sI had got to the point in my life where I was sick of being miserable and constantly worrying about if people could see the rolls of fat all over my body. ??sI was sick of hiding away. I also knew I needed to [lose weight] before my health would start having implications of being overweight. "Hypnotherapy isn???t what you would normally assume like the ???swinging of a pendant sending you to sleep???. "It???s simply sitting back in a relaxed state and being spoken to and asked questions. "You???ll talk about anything that comes to mind and try to get to the root of your problems. "It changes your way of thinking and while being in a relaxed state your subconscious mind kind of takes over. "It???s hard to explain but it really worked for me." Lauren has never taken medication for her depression, although her GP has suggested it when she was a teenager. She said: "Everyone???s choice is different for their own reasons and that???s fine. "However for me, it didn???t feel right to choose that option because, at 16, I assumed it was something I had to deal with. It wasn???t ever going to go away. "It wasn???t until I reached the age of 21 that I knew I didn???t want to live like this anymore. "Depression was ruining my life and that's when I turned to hypnotherapy." Following her hypnotherapy sessions, Lauren no longer struggles with depression and has a happy and positive outlook on life. She has also embarked on a healthy diet, joining Slimming World and swapping calorific meals for nutritious dishes. Lauren, an academic mentor in a primary school, now finally feels like herself, having lost 6 stone and 1lbs over two years, weighing in at 13 stone and 3lbs. She has one more stone to go before reaching her goal weight and has made a complete lifestyle overhaul. As for her diet, the young woman opts for 'fat-free' or 'low fat' alternatives to her favourite foods ??" such as Quavers or Hula Hoop Pufts instead of high-calorie crisps, fruit instead of chocolate, homemade 'Nando's' and more. But she'll still indulge in a takeaway now and then. She said: "My ???diet??? is my lifestyle now. "Don???t get me wrong, I still have a takeaway every now and again because you???ve got to live a little. I just make better choices. "If I???m hungry I won???t go for crisps or chocolate, I???ll go for fruit. "Or if I fancy crisps, I'll go for the low-calorie ones such as Ringo???s, Quavers, Hula Hoop Pufts. "My popular go-to's for breakfast is Cheerios, fruit and yoghurt or banana oat bread." ??sMindset is everything. I can???t say that enough. "Unless you are ready mentally to lose weight, it won???t happen." Lauren also credits her new mindset and working on her mental health with getting her through lockdown. She added: ""My weight ruined my mental health. "The depression started due to issues at school and at home. Because of that, I turned to food and then I started piling on the weight. "My depression then got worse and I was dealing with body confidence issues and started buying baggier clothes to hide away. "If I hadn???t had worked on my mental health before, Covid and being in lockdown would have been 100 times worse. "I really don???t know how I would have coped and my heaviest weight would have probably got even heavier. "It???s a scary thought." BEFORE DIET BREAKFAST: No breakfast LUNCH: Ready-made meals, or pasta, pizza, jacket potatoes and snacks such as chocolate, crisps, sweets. DINNER: Curry takeaways or jacket potatoes, ready meals. SNACKS: Bacon rasher crisps, mini Rolls, chocolate bars. AFTER DIET BREAKFAST: Weetabix with skimmed milk or 40g of multigrain Cheerios with milk. LUNCH: Low-fat Pasta 'n' Sauce pack or a wholewheat sandwich filled with either ham and lighter cheese triangles or tuna with extra light mayonnaise with sweetcorn or cucumber and red onion. DINNER: Home-cooked meals like spaghetti bolognese, vegetable risotto and carbonara. Occasionally, she will still treat herself to her favourite Indian or Chinese takeaway. Lauren said: ??sI feel incredible. I feel like me again. "I can start living life the way I want, wear clothes that look nice and I can shop in actual physical stores rather than finding ???plus sized' clothes online. "Don???t wait until Monday, or next week or next month to lose weight. "Just start today. Every good choice you make adds up.??? Lauren is sharing her journey on Instagram (@downsizingflabulously).
