EXCLUSIVE: **NO NEW YORK POST OR NEWS CORP USAGES** Story from Jam Press (Thailand Dog Rescue) Pictured: Michael J Baines with staff and dogs rescued by TMTRD. Meet the man who is looking after 950 dogs in need ??" but is struggling to keep his shelter afloat during the pandemic A British man who rescues disabled dogs in Thailand is struggling to keep his shelter afloat during the pandemic ??" as it relies solely on donations to survive. Michael J Baines, 53, born in Scotland but raised in Sweden, moved to the Asian country in 2002 to work full-time as a chef ??" but later left his culinary career behind to start a rescue shelter for disabled dogs. At first, he helped the pups on his own ??" assisting animals in need on the street by providing them with food and medical care. But in the past 19 years, Michael has hired 30 team members who altogether look after 600 resident dogs and 350 dogs on the streets ??" feeding them daily and operating a free-of-charge clinic on-site that is fully booked almost every day. Many of the pups have serious conditions, with 27 in wheelchairs and paralysed from car accidents, while 12 have distemper in the brain and central nervous system. Unfortunately, the pandemic has hit the shelter ??" dubbed The Man That Rescues Dogs (TMTRD) ??" hard, with a 40% drop in income. ??sDuring the pandemic, since almost a year now, we have seen a drop in donations of 40%,??? Michael told Jam Press. ??sIt???s been difficult, yes, and that we had to dig deep in our emergency fund. "Hopefully, we can build up that emergency fund again after this pandemic is over. ??sWe rely 97% on donations, solely from people around the world. We do not have any back-up from the government or big companies. ??sWe have some merchandise we sell online and we get some food and other things from some companies around us. But that???s not a lot. ??sThe drop donations have not affected the dogs in the shelter ??" but on the other hand, we had to cut down in days when our clinic is open. ??sTwenty seven of our dogs are paralysed and all have their own wheelchair, they live with around 35 other special need dogs in our care unit. "Staff take care of these dogs around the clock. ??sWe have 28 staff of which two are veterinarians who manage our free of charge clinic, where we treat animals daily and perform daily spay and neutering. ??sWe have three admins who answer messages, find homes for the dog we have, coordinate rescues and do bookkeeping and HR work. ??sWe hire 19 caretakers who clean, prepare food, feed, walk and socialise with the dogs, taking care of our quarantine area where newly-arrived dogs need to be until they are fully vaccinated, spayed and neutered. ??sThis is all funded by donations from around the world." TMTRD's free clinic used to be open seven days a week but has now had to cut this down to five days in order to reduce costs. Michael added: ??sOther than that, the dogs in the shelter have not been affected by this pandemic, but we have had to say no to some rescues because of space and funds. ??sAnd we had to temporarily put our spay and neuter campaigns in our local community on hold.??? Michael and his staff spend about 40,000 Baht (?L950) a day on the dogs, including medical care, food and bedding ??" these costs add up to 1 million Baht (?L28,499) a year. The shelter founder is planning to expand the rescue to fit more dogs and turn their on-site clinic into a fully-equipped hospital ??" but this will require 5 million Baht (?L118,749). He said: ??sWe have two construction staff who are improving and expanding, and are ready for the big future project, to make our clinic into a fully equipped animal hospital. ??sAfter we find the 5 million Baht, we are ready to start that project and also expand our shelter by another 5000 sqm, we need this because many dogs are waiting for a spot at our place, and it would cost 1.2 million."
