In thirty years of dictatorship and economic sanctions, it was difficult - and undesirable - to obtain a visa for Sudan. But the revolution and the end of the dictatorship of 2019 also led to the hope that the archaeological sites of the Pyramids and not only of Ancient Nubia along the Nile - registered in the UNESCO World Heritage Site - will return to attract not only visitors, archaeologists and restorers and especially the Sudanese themselves who now want to discover their country. Al-Musawarat Al-Sufra, is a large Meroitic temple complex in modern Sudan, dating back to the early Meroitic period of the 3rd century BC. A local tourist guide stands by the graffiti inside the Lion Temple. With Mero? and Naqa it is known as the Island of Meroe, and was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011. Though the site is one of the main attractions for Sudan's tourists, the local tourism industry has been devastated by a series of economic sanctions imposed by various Western nations throughout the course of the country's civil war and the conflict in Darfur. After the 2019 revolution and the oust of the former dictator Omar al-Bashir, Sudan hopes to increase the number of tourists in the country.
