Author Ernest Hemingway, a long-time resident of Cuba, receives the "Order of Carlos Manuel de Cespedes," highest honor Cuba can bestow on a foreigner in a ceremony at Havana on July 21, 1954. Honor was presented by Gonzalo Guell, Sub-secretary of State, on Hemingway's 55th birthday. Presentation was made on behalf of President Batista. Hemingway's shaved head and still-visible scars are the result of injuries suffered in African plane crashes earlier this year. (AP Photo)
