China, Kashgar, January 2006 Early morning on the day of the big Aid El Kebir celebration. The Uyghurs, Muslim minority of Xinjiang, gather together in the Aidkah Mosque of Kashgar. Created in 1442, it is the largest mosque in China, and can hold 10,000 worshippers. Religious education is not allowed until the age of 18. Most Uyghurs are not very religious, but it's the only form of expression they are allowed. There is strict surveillance of the mosques and prayer is against the law for Uyghur state employees.
