(NYT17) NEW YORK -- June 3, 2001 -- TONY-AWARDS -- The 55th annual Tony Awards were presided over by Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, who began the show's first hour broadcast in easy chairs, spectacles and smoking jackets, and the second two hours in tuxedos. Mel Brooks' hit, "The Producers,'' swept the early Tony Awards, presented Sunday night at Radio City Music Hall in New York, winning for everything from best direction of a musical to best costumes and best orchestrations.
