Polish citizens, allegedly with the assistance of Nazi, massacred some 1,600 Jews from Radzilow and Jedwabne by forcing them into a barn and setting it on fire in 1941.
Controversy has surrounded the wording of the text on the memorial, modeled on a Jewish gravestone and set in a granite-walled field whose text leaves the killers unnamed.
It reads:To the memory of Jews from Jedwabne and the surrounding areas, men, women and children, fellow citizens of this country, murdered and burned alive at this place on July 10, 1941.''
