U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney was amongst guests at the National Tartan Day ceremony, which honoured the knighted actor, who wore traditional Scottish costume for the occasion. Sir Sean was the sole nominee for the award in recognition of Scots' contributions to American life. The award is a bronze medal dedicated to William Wallace, the Scottish freedom fighter who was captured by the King Edward the First of England and hung, drawn and quartered in 1305. Past recipients have included Senator Trent Lott, who steered the resolution declaring Tartan Day an American holiday through the Senate. It has also been given posthumously to Andrew Carnegie, the Scottish philanthropist, and Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone.
