Queen Latifah has opened up about her dark days - and how her love of God got her through. Latifah, real name Dana Elaine Owens, told Real Housekeeping that her downward spiral started with the death of her brother Lance, a cop, when he crashed a motorbike she had brought him just two months earlier. "My life was rocked to the core," the 43-year-old said. "And I felt guilty because I was angry at God." Then in 1995 she had a close friend almost die in her arms when they were victims of an armed carjacking. She admits she turned to self-medication. "Drinking a bunch of alcohol, numbing myself," she recalled of that dark period, which ended with her being arrested while driving with a small amount of marijuana and also a loaded handgun, which she had carried since the carjacking. "Every day I would be faded, like a painting that's just not vibrant, whose edges are dull. I wasn't living my full life." She then sought therapy - and realized she had been molested as a child by a babysitter, a secret she'd kept buried for years. She says it was her faith that got her through. "I was continuously praying," she says. "I learned that God was going to provide comfort; I know He is always listening and guiding. I got this little message in my head that I feel was from God. It was as clear as day, like a voice that said to me, Dana, don't let it all go, because you're gonna get through this."
